Guest Artist - Jared Holt : Baritone

Jared HoltJared Holt was born and raised in New Zealand where he completed a Bachelors degree in Classics and a Law Degree with Honours in addition to opera, oratorio and recital commitments. In 2000 he won the Mobil Song Quest New Zealand and the Karaviotis Scholarship which enabled him to undertake vocal studies at the Royal College of Music in London studying with Vera Rozsa. He joined the Vilar Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in 2003.

Operatic roles include Papageno (The Magic Flute); Count (The Marriage of Figaro); Schaunard (La Boheme); Zaretsky (Eugene Onegin); Yamadori (Madama Butterfly); Valentin (Faust); Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus); Baron (La Traviata); Podestat (Le Docteur Miracle); Masetto (Don Giovanni); Demetrius (A Midsummer Night’s Dream); Marco (Gianni Schicchi); Pelleas (Pelleas et Melisande); Figaro (Barber of Seville); Ned Keene (Peter Grimes – Italian debut at the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi, Trieste, Italy); Silvio (Pagliacci); Sid (Albert Herring); Nilakantha (Lakme). Roles at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in 2003/04 included The Second Philistine (Samson & Delilah), Wigmaker (Ariadne auf Naxos) and Junius (Rape of Lucretia).

Jared Holt’s oratorio performances include: Handel Messiah; Bach St John Passion and St Matthew Passion, Christmas Oratorio (with Peter Schreier conducting); Orff Carmina Burana; Rossini Petite Messe Solenelle; Faure Requiem and Britten’s War Requiem.

A keen recitalist, he has performed Poulenc Songs with Malcolm Martineau; Dichterliebe, Schubert and Strauss songs with Simon Lepper for BBC Radio Northern Ireland; participated in the Young Songmakers Almanac Series with Graham Johnson at the Wigmore Hall, London, given a recital of English song in Gstaad with Gary Matthewman as part of the Young Songmakers Almanac; recorded Brahms and Duparc songs for the BBC ‘Voices’ series with Eugene Asti; given a BBC broadcast recital of Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin with Simon Lepper for BBC Wales and performed in concert with Sir Thomas Allen for the Samling Foundation at St John’s Smith Square in London. Jared Holt made his BBC PROMS debut in a concert performance of Dvorak’s Dimitrij conducted by Richard Hickox.

More recently, he appeared with the Northern Sinfonia in L’enfance du Christ and recorded the role of Melot (Tristan und Isolde) with Antonio Pappano for EMI Classics. In 2005 at the Royal Opera House, Jared performed Marullo (Rigoletto), Silvano (Un Ballo in maschera), Crebillon (La Rondine), the title role in Philip Glass’ ‘Orphee’ and Happy (La Fanciulla del West). He also sang the role of Captain (Death of Klinghoffer) at the Auckland Festival and debuted with Opera Australia as Marcello (La boheme).
